Race Points Rule

The race rule is for questions where more than one prediction is made and the order of the predictions is important. For correct predictions, a distinction must be made as to whether the position was guessed correctly or incorrectly.

The following example asks for the podium positions, i.e. the top three of a race:

Race result example

  1. Participant A
  2. Participant B
  3. Participant C

Prediction example

  1. Participant D
  2. Participant A
  3. Participant C

Three different states can occur with the predictions:

  • Incorrect prediction: "Participant D" was predicted as the winner. As this participant did not finish in the top three, the prediction is incorrect.

  • Correct prediction in the wrong position: "Participant A" was predicted to finish in second place. Although participant A did not finish second, he did finish in the top three (1st place). As the first three players in the race were asked for, this prediction is correct, but in the wrong position.

  • Correct prediction in the correct position: "Participant C" was predicted to finish in third place and also came third. This prediction is therefore correct and in the right position.

This distinction is now also taken into account when awarding points.

Correct prediction in the correct position

The number of points can be defined here for each position:

Example 1

Points for correct prediction in correct position 1 5
Points for correct prediction in correct position 2 5
Points for correct prediction in correct position 3 5

Example 2

Points for correct prediction in correct position 1 5
Points for correct prediction in correct position 2 4
Points for correct prediction in correct position 3 3

In example 1, the same number of points are awarded for each correct prediction in the correct position. So it doesn't matter whether I predicted the winner or the third player exactly.

In example 2, 5 points are awarded if I have correctly predicted the winner, but only 3 points are awarded for a correct prediction by the third-placed player.

Correct prediction in the wrong position

You can award absolute or relative points for correct predictions in the wrong position.

Absolute

Points for a correct prediction in the wrong position 1

One point is always awarded for a correct prediction in the wrong position, regardless of how far off the mark you were with the position. In the example above, one point would have been awarded for the prediction "participant" A.

Relative

Points deducted per incorrect position 1

Here, one point is deducted from the full number of points that you would have received for the prediction in the correct position for each position that you were wrong.

The above race result and the points awarded as in example 2 result in 3 points for the prediction "participant A". In the example, participant A was predicted to finish in second place. There would have been 4 points for second place. However, participant A came first, so the prediction was one position off the mark. Therefore, 1 point is deducted from the 4 points.
